Which certificate should I scan, the one from the first or the second vaccination?

Both certificates can theoretically be scanned in, but only the one with which you have full vaccination protection is relevant for presenting, usually the second one. After a booster vaccination, the previous certificate can be deleted. Multiple passes from COVID Pass are displayed side by side.

How can I delete the certificate again?

Open the Wallet app on the iPhone (not just double-click the lock button, really search for the app on your iPhone). Here, select the pass and click on the three dots in the upper right corner. There it is written in red “Remove card”.

When I want to scan the QR code, only an empty box appears instead of the camera image.

Unfortunately, since iOS 15 there is a bug in Safari that does not display the camera preview image correctly. If you don’t see the image, scroll to the top of the page and then back down again and you should see the camera image.

The pass is not added to Apple Wallet when I tap the “Add to Apple Wallet” button.

Please use the Safari browser on the iPhone. Other browsers, the iPad, and computers are not fully unsupported.

Why does the iPad show me the error message “Safari cannot load this file”?

The iPad cannot handle passes properly, it shows the error message “Safari cannot load this file”. On the Mac the file can be downloaded and then transferred to the iPhone e.g. via AirDrop. Please use a secure communication channel (e.g. no unencrypted mail), because it is sensitive data from you.

Why is the date “2nd vaccination date + 14 days” not written on the pass?

The digital vaccination certificate follows the Electronic Health Certificates specification. This specifies that only the vaccination date is to be stored in the QR code. Only the validating instance, e.g. the CovPass Check app, has the information about when, for example, full vaccination protection will occur. Currently, this delta between vaccination and validated vaccination card is 14 days, but this can change again, e.g., based on new scientific findings. In short, based on the information stored in the QR code, we cannot know and therefore cannot write on the pass when the vaccination is “valid”. And ultimately, the text on the Apple Wallet Pass is not part of the vaccination card at all, as is sometimes erroneously assumed, but this is actually exclusively the QR code displayed in connection with an identification document.

“Help, my Apple Watch is crashing!”

This problem with the Apple Watch is unfortunately a known one (see here), which is probably due to a faulty synchronization between Watch and iPhone. The forum post also reports a solution, but it requires a complete reset of the iPhone and Watch. The problem has nothing directly to do with our pass, so, unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do. Having a pass only on the iPhone does not work, as far as we know. The best thing to do is to contact Apple Support, who will certainly be able to provide you with expert help."

How does the COVID Pass get on the Apple Watch?

All Wallet Passes (except credit cards) are automatically synced from iPhone to Apple Watch. You do not need to do anything, it just appears, it sometimes takes a few minutes though.

What about Android?

For security reasons, we only support iOS devices. However, if you want to add your COVID Pass on Android, you will need a third-party app, such as WalletPasses, Pass2U Wallet or ONE Wallet. We can’t recommend any of these apps, as we don’t know how your pass will be stored there and whether the respective companies can get access to your personal data, which is highly sensitive in this case. So testing of these apps is at your own risk.

Since iOS 15.4, Apple also natively supports EU vaccination certificates. Why should I still use COVID Pass?

Good point. In fact, Apple’s solution is easier to set up and includes a larger QR code. We launched COVID Pass in July 2021 to fill the technical gap for three quarters of a year when Apple didn’t support it natively. We are happy that Apple is now solving it better than we ever could have technically. However, Apple only supports vaccination certificates, while you can add recovery and test certificates to Apple Wallet through us. So it’s still worth using COVID Pass for that. And if you like the color blue better, you’ve come to the right place, because Apple’s pass is alamingly red.

As of March 2022, we have created 235,000 COVID Passes and have been featured in various press articles. With our knowledge of the Apple Wallet interface and a new customer need that was brought to us, we have now launched Business pass. We hope to help keep people in touch, turn fleeting encounters into long relationships, and take the barrier out of creating your own business cards. Because, as we realize almost every day, networking is an essential part of business.

Who all helped with COVID Pass?
